Google Policy Fellowship Call

This call is now closed.

Fellowship Location: Hong Kong (or, in exceptional circumstances, another Asian location)

The Digital Asia Hub is an independent, non-profit Internet and society research think tank based in Hong Kong. Incubated by The Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University and a diverse group of academic, civil society, and private sector partners, the Hub provides a non-partisan, open, and collaborative platform for research, knowledge sharing and capacity building related to Internet and Society issues with focus on digital Asia. The Hub also aims to strengthen effective multi-stakeholder discourse, with both local and regional activities, and will contribute to – and itself serve as a node of – a larger network of academic organizations: the Global Network of Internet & Society Centers (the “NoC”).

The Hub undertakes activities in three main areas: research, knowledge sharing and capacity building. Ideally, fellows will be able to contribute to all three by carrying out research with impact that is accessible to a wider audience. At the core of the Hub is independent and interdisciplinary research exploring both the opportunities and challenges related to digital technology, innovation and society in Asia.

Fellowship Focus Areas

  • Trending technologies and technology spaces: Artificial Intelligence, Smart Cities, Big Data, Internet of Things, Smart Contracts
  • Mobile Technology and its impact on education, entrepreneurship and healthcare
  • The use of ICTs for development, urban planning and civic engagement
  • Digital Rights (including access, privacy, freedom of expression)
  • Technologies that affect identity, inclusion, citizenship and participatory democracy
  • Innovation, open manufacturing and digital trade

The fellowship program is open to students from a variety of disciplines whose work and interests are anchored in Asia. Above all, we are keen to hear from applicants who are excited by collaboration, community and change, and by the prospect of being the inaugural batch of Policy Fellows at the Digital Asia Hub.

Application deadline is 15 August 2016. Specific dates of the fellowship will be agreed with the candidates. The fellowship period must conclude by the 30th of December 2016.
